A Heart of Gratitude

Good morning brethren, I would like to write on the topic: “A Heart of Gratitude. What does gratitude mean, especially towards God? Gratitude toward God is the act of recognising, appreciating, and honoring Him for who He is and for all He has done. It is a sincere response of the heart that acknowledges God’s love, mercy, provision, protection, guidance, and salvation. Let me quickly add that gratitude in the Bible is not just the act of saying  thank you, it is a lifestyle of godly worship, trust, obedience, and appreciation of God’s goodness. Simply put, gratitude is a heartfelt acknowledgment of God’s goodness expressed through praise, thanksgiving, and faithful living. The Scripture in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This is proof that gratitude should not only be based on the good moments of life, but also during hardship, because God remains faithful.

A grateful heart often draws a person closer to God. Psalms 100:4 says “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.” It has also been proven that gratitude brings peace. Philippians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything… but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” I pray that God will let thanksgiving fill your heart with peace and remove anxiety and fear from your life, in Jesus name. Gratitude shifts our focus from fear to trust, which leads to peace. A thankful heart acknowledges blessings as gifts from God rather than personal achievements alone. James 1:17 reminds us “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” In Psalms 103:2, King David expressed gratitude through songs and prayers. Even in seasons of failure and struggle, he remembered God’s mercy and blessings. Gratitude remembers God’s goodness instead of focusing only on problems. Looking further into Scripture, we see how Jesus fed the five thousand after giving thanks for the little food available (Matthew 15:36). Gratitude acknowledges God’s provision even before the miracle appears. Sadly, in our communities and churches today, many receive blessings, but only a few return with gratitude. In Luke 17:11-19, we read about the one thankful leper who returned to Jesus. Jesus asked “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” Thankfulness deeply honours God. Paul and Silas are another example. Even while imprisoned, they prayed and sang praises to God (Acts 16:25). Their hearts were not controlled by their circumstances. A grateful heart is characterised by humility, contentment, trust in God’s goodnessgoodnes, faith and joy. Some practical ways to develop gratitude - pray with thanksgiving, thank God whether at victory or trials, appreciate others especially in their efforts, celebrate others especially in their success stories, meditate on scripture especially about God’s faithfulness.

In conclusion, let us pray these prayers together - Father, remove every spirit of complaining, negativity, and dissatisfaction from my life in Jesus name.  Father, help me to trust You and remain grateful even in seasons of trials and uncertainty in Jesus name. Father, open my eyes to recognise and appreciate every blessing You have placed in my life in Jesus name. Father, teach me to be content with what You have provided and to trust Your timing for my life in Jesus name.  Father, let praise and thanksgiving become my daily lifestyle, not just a response to blessings in Jesus name.  Father, let thanksgiving fill my heart with peace and remove anxiety and fear from my life in Jesus name. Father, establish a spirit of gratitude, love, and praise in my family and home in Jesus name. Service is at 10:30am, and the workers meeting is at 10:00am. God’s blessings - Mike
